Lee Ha Jun

AS: Looking forward to checking that one out. Do you think you’ll ever be interested in writing and directing a feature film of your own?
LHJ:
Rather than directing or writing, I’m more interested in cinematography. I study cinematography now too.

AS: Do you have any advice for people just starting out as production designers?
LHJ:
Production designers should open their eyes wide. Never close your thoughts. When you open your eyes to small things, you’ll see the details that could make an amazing library. You can draw inspiration from this library. Do not try to look only for good or cool things. See everything you can, you will see the story and what it contains. When you keep looking at the people on the street, you can sometimes tell their character from their walking style and fashion. If you train yourself to look into the things around you, you’ll have a very good quality library of your own.

Also, you need to be physically healthy so that you can have the strength to run around to work. Sometimes you need to win the fight with stamina. Do not give up easily.

Do not only watch entertaining films. Watch lots of films so that you can compare them to each other. But even as I say this, I know I’m unable to watch that many films because of my work schedule. I have a wish list of films to binge watch later when I have time. I hope that time comes soon.

AS: Anything else you would like to add?
LHJ:
Thank you to everyone who loved the Korean film Parasite. I am so grateful for the love and for the film to generate so much interest during the Oscar campaign. It was an unforgettable experience.
